Iran 2026 World Cup Squad: Team Melli, the Visa Crisis, and Playing a World Cup in a Country at War With Them
Iran arrived at the 2026 World Cup under conditions unlike any other team in the tournament's history.
The United States is at war with Iran. All three of Iran's group stage games are in the United States. And in the months leading up to the tournament, the diplomatic crisis between Washington and Tehran came close to derailing Iranian football's participation entirely.
It started at the draw. When the 2026 World Cup draw took place at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. on December 5, Iran boycotted it. The US had denied visas to key members of the Iranian delegation, including Football Federation President Mehdi Taj — one of the most senior officials in Asian soccer and a member of two FIFA committees. Iran's federation spokesman described the US action as "non-sporting" and "visa obstacles that go beyond sports considerations." FIFA was formally notified. Iran stayed home.
Then came the training camp crisis. Iran had arranged to prepare in Tucson, Arizona. Then the US denied visas to 15 administrative and management staff — including federation chief Taj again. The players received their visas just 10 days before their first match. But 14 support staff were denied. The federation described it as "political interference in sport in its worst form."
FIFA intervened. At FIFA's suggestion, Iran moved their base camp from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico — directly across the border from San Diego. They arrived in Tijuana at 5am on a Sunday morning after an overnight flight from Turkey, where they had been training for three weeks. Forward Mehdi Taremi said the situation was creating a "lot of tension" around the World Cup. Alireza Jahanbakhsh told the media simply: "We're in the US to call for peace and unity."
This is the backdrop against which Iran are trying to reach the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time in their history.
The Coach: Amir Ghalenoei
Amir Ghalenoei is not new to this job. He managed Iran between 2006 and 2007 and made an impression before returning to club football. He was reappointed in March 2023 for his second spell and has maintained the respect of the squad ever since.
His philosophy prioritises organisation over possession. A veteran-first selection approach. Compact defensive structure. Risk management in build-up. Counter-attack-driven football designed to be hard to beat and dangerous on the transition.
In two pre-tournament friendlies in March, Ghalenoei showed his tactical range. Against Nigeria he lined up in a 3-6-1 — his "defensive plan B" that he described as being designed specifically for the match against Belgium. Against Costa Rica he used a 4-4-2, indicating he intends to shift systems depending on the opponent.
His base formation heading into the tournament is a 4-2-3-1. Beiranvand in goal. Hardani and Mohammadi at full-back. Khalilzadeh and Kanani in the centre. Ezatolahi and Ghoddos as the double pivot. Jahanbakhsh, Ghayedi and Mohebbi in the attacking midfield band. Taremi leading the line alone.
Expected Formation: 4-2-3-1
Compact, organised, dangerous on the counter. Taremi drops deep to link play and drive forward. Jahanbakhsh stretches the left flank. The double pivot sits and protects. When Iran win the ball back, they move quickly — Ghalenoei has built this system around transitioning from defence to attack before the opposition can reset.

Goalkeepers
Alireza Beiranvand — Tractor FC
The undisputed first choice. Beiranvand has been Iran's goalkeeper for over a decade and brings World Cup experience from 2018 and 2022. His shot-stopping ability, command of the penalty area, and vocal organisation of the defensive line have made him one of the most respected goalkeepers in Asian football.
Payam Niazmand — Persepolis
Reliable backup with Persian Gulf Pro League experience. Niazmand gives Ghalenoei a trusted second option without a significant drop in quality if Beiranvand picks up an injury.
Seyed Hossein Hosseini — Sepahan
Third-choice goalkeeper who brings composure and domestic experience. His familiarity with the national team environment makes him a valued squad member.
Defenders
Saleh Hardani — Esteghlal
One of the unsung heroes of Iran's qualification campaign. Hardani made 21 tackles during World Cup qualifying and proved incredibly hard to beat, locking down the right side with a 64.5% duel success rate while only being dribbled past four times. His defensive intelligence and recovery pace make him one of the most complete right backs in Asian football.
Shoja Khalilzadeh — Tractor FC
The veteran defensive leader with over 100 international caps. Khalilzadeh's experience, reading of the game, and ability to organise the back four make him one of Ghalenoei's most trusted players. At 37, this is almost certainly his final World Cup.
Hossein Kanani — Persepolis
Khalilzadeh's partner in the centre of Iran's back four. Physical, strong in the air, and developing quickly in the Iranian domestic league. His understanding with Khalilzadeh gives Ghalenoei a reliable central defensive pairing.
Milad Mohammadi — Persepolis
The first-choice left back whose attacking contribution from deep is an important part of how Iran build. Mohammadi's experience across multiple international campaigns makes him a consistent performer in Ghalenoei's system.
Ehsan Hajsafi — Sepahan
Veteran defender who became internationally known for his emotional comments at the 2022 World Cup supporting protesters back home. Hajsafi's experience, leadership, and ability to play at left back or in midfield give Ghalenoei tactical flexibility.
Ramin Rezaeian — Foolad FC
Experienced right-sided defensive option with international caps spread across multiple World Cup cycles. His understanding of tournament football gives Ghalenoei a reliable rotation option.
Danial Iri — Malavan
Young defensive option providing depth. Iri's inclusion reflects Ghalenoei's interest in building the next generation alongside the experienced core.
Aria Yousefi — Sepahan
Versatile defensive option who can cover multiple positions across the back line. His domestic form earned his place in the final 26.
Ali Nemati — Foolad FC
Physical, defensive-minded option who gives Ghalenoei a different profile at centre-back when the game demands direct defensive strength.
Midfielders
Saeid Ezatolahi — Shabab Al-Ahli
The engine of the double pivot alongside Ghoddos. Ezatolahi's physicality, ability to win second balls, and covering runs protect the back four and allow Ghalenoei to push Jahanbakhsh and Ghayedi higher up the pitch. His experience in Gulf football has kept him sharp at the highest domestic level in Asia.
Saman Ghoddos — Kalba FC
The unsung hero of this squad. Since making his debut almost a decade ago, Ghoddos has been a reliable, consistent member of the Iran squad. Born in Malmö, Sweden, he has never played for an Iranian club — which has meant he has not benefited from the traditional support of club fans and receives less media attention than his contributions deserve. A former Brentford player capable of operating almost anywhere on the pitch, his professionalism and character are well-liked throughout the squad.
Alireza Jahanbakhsh — FCV Dender
The captain of the attacking players and Iran's creative heartbeat. Jahanbakhsh is just two caps away from reaching 100 international appearances and should reach that landmark during the World Cup. His directness, pace, and ability to create from the left wing make him the most dangerous player Iran have in wide areas. With Sardar Azmoun omitted from the squad, the creative burden falls heavily on Jahanbakhsh's shoulders.
Mohammad Mohebbi — Rostov
Dynamic wide midfielder who provides the right-side alternative to Jahanbakhsh on the left. Mohebbi's energy, pressing intensity, and ability to contribute to both defensive and attacking phases make him an important component of Ghalenoei's 4-2-3-1 shape.
Rouzbeh Cheshmi — Esteghlal
Experienced central midfielder known internationally for scoring one of the best goals at the 2022 World Cup — a long-range strike against Wales. His set-piece delivery and composure in possession give Ghalenoei a technically assured option in central areas.
Mehdi Torabi — Tractor FC
Experienced wide attacking player who can operate across the front line or in the advanced midfield positions. Torabi's domestic form and his history with the national team make him one of Ghalenoei's trusted squad options.
Mehdi Ghayedi — Al-Nasr SC
Technical attacking midfielder who provides creativity and the ability to play between the lines. Ghayedi's movement, dribbling, and finishing from range give Iran an unpredictable element in the final third that complements Taremi's direct approach.
Mohammad Ghorbani — Al-Wahda
Young central midfielder developing in Gulf football. His technical quality and composure give Ghalenoei a depth option with a different profile to the more experienced central players.
Amir Razzaghinia — Esteghlal
The youngest midfielder in the squad at 20. His inclusion gives Iran tournament experience for the next cycle while also providing squad energy and pressing intensity.
Forwards
Mehdi Taremi — Olympiacos
The captain. Iran's greatest goal-scorer and the only Iranian player to score more than once at a World Cup — his brace against England at the 2026 tournament makes him one of the defining players in Team Melli's history. Taremi's Olympiacos form, his movement in tight spaces, his ability to finish under pressure, and his leadership on and off the pitch make him the undisputed focal point of everything Iran do in attack. He led qualifying with 10 goals in 15 games. He enters the group stage as the most important player Iran have ever taken to a World Cup.
Ali Alipour — Persepolis
Physical striker option who gives Ghalenoei a completely different profile from Taremi's technical game. Alipour's strength, aerial ability, and hold-up play make him a useful option when Iran need to play more directly or see out a result.
Dennis Dargahi — Standard de Liège
Belgian-Iranian forward who brings European football experience. Dargahi's pace, directness, and clinical finishing give Ghalenoei an impact option from the bench when the game opens up in the second half.
Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh — Tractor FC
Young forward developing quickly in the Iranian domestic league. His movement, pressing intensity, and ability to stretch defences make him a useful alternative to the more experienced forwards.
Shahriyar Moghanloo — Kalba FC
Experienced forward with Gulf football experience. Moghanloo's physicality and positioning in the box give Ghalenoei a direct option from the bench in the closing stages of matches.
Iran's Group G Schedule: Three Games in the Country at War With Them
All three of Iran's group matches are in the United States — the co-host they are at war with, the country that denied visas to 14 of their support staff, the country whose president said he didn't think it was "appropriate" for Iran to participate.

New Zealand first in Los Angeles — the most winnable fixture. Belgium six days later at the same stadium — the hardest. Egypt in Seattle on June 26 to close — a match between two sides both chasing their first-ever World Cup knockout appearance.
Iran and the US could potentially meet in the Round of 32 on July 3 in Arlington, Texas, if both teams finish second in their groups. The political implications of that fixture — if it happens — would be unlike anything in World Cup history.
What Iran Actually Need to Do
Iran have never reached the Round of 16. Seven World Cup appearances, six group stage exits. The 2026 tournament on US soil, against the backdrop of the visa crisis and diplomatic tensions, is the most remarkable context any Iranian team has ever played in.
Ghalenoei has them organised. Taremi is in form. Jahanbakhsh approaches his 100th cap. The squad flew from Turkey to Mexico on a private jet at 5am, arrived in Tijuana while the country above the border denied entry to 14 of their colleagues, and went straight to training.
Beat New Zealand. Take a point from Egypt. Hope Belgium have an off-day.
If they do, Iran reach the knockout stage for the first time ever — in the United States, despite everything.
